Hey there!

I know I am not around much as of late, but I do still check in once in a while.. ;)

I receive a lot of submissions to this group that are direct screen shots-  edited and unedited, as well as film clips - again edited and unedited,  from the HBO series.  I inquired with DA on a specific submission and what is acceptable per DA guidelines and what is not to make sure I was interpreting things correctly.  This is what they said:

You may wish to read our Copyright Policy, available here [link]

Our copyright policy, in brief, states that your deviantART submissions may only contain materials or images which were created entirely through your own effort or materials or images for which you have obtained permission to use in the submission; this means that content such as screenshots, celebrity photographs, video game sprites, and other similar materials are not typically considered to be valid resources for use in submissions to your deviantART gallery unless you have obtained permission.

This group will not post any more deviations that do not follow these rules and I will eventually have to remove some that I have approved in the past.

Some may not agree with this strict policy...but really, this is an art site and simply copying stuff doesn't seem to fit the spirit of our community.

I would like to thank all the rest of you who produce such wonderful work for sharing it with the rest of the GoT series fans!'s

Thanks!
Rissa

I don't understand: if I copy an HBO picture such as that of Daenerys standing next to her horse, can't I just credit it "after HBO"?

I guess not since you have not received permission...unless such images fall under some other public use copyright, which I really have no idea if they do. I was surprised at this as well....DA is full of these and other popular culture images and no one seems to say anything...perhaps DA is just protecting itself from liability by stating it in such a strict manner...?

Thanks, because I'm really surprised my copy wasn't accepted.

Now that I know which piece you are referring to I can better address this....I think because it is not a screen shot its fine....you created it yourself and just used the screenshot as reference and cited it. Its those that take an actual screenshot or clip and post it as their own...even with some manipulation.
